Founded in 1951 as an independent label, argo was taken over by British Decca in 1957, then by PolyGram in 1980 when the latter acquired British Decca. It was wound up in 1988. Decca relaunched the argo imprint in 1990. The argo catalogue is currently controlled by Universal Music Group.
